Thermochemical Processes

Development of thermochemical processes and advanced catalysts for the conversion of renewable resources and waste streams into fuels and value-added products.

What We Do

The Unit focuses its research activities on the development of sustainable technologies for converting solid waste, platform molecules, biogas and CO₂ into sustainable fuels and high-value chemicals.

Its research lies at the intersection of thermochemical processes, catalysis and materials development, with a particular focus on waste valorisation, CO₂ utilisation and sustainable energy production.

The Unit combines catalyst design, the development of efficient processes and experimental validation to deliver technological solutions aligned with the principles of the circular economy and the decarbonisation of industrial and energy systems.

Team Members

Research Areas

  • Development of thermochemical processes and advanced catalysts for the production of sustainable fuels and high-value chemicals from organic solid waste.
  • Catalytic conversion of waste-derived platform molecules into chemicals and fuels of industrial and commercial interest.
  • Development of materials for solar fuel production through the dry reforming of CH₄ and biogas.
  • Design and synthesis of dendritic zeolites for innovative, high-impact catalytic applications.

Facilities

The Thermochemical Processes Unit’s research infrastructure includes a laboratory and a pilot plant for biomass production and conversion, together with a wide range of instrumental techniques and simulation and modelling tools that enable us to develop advanced capabilities and pursue our research objectives.
