BioMOFtion: Paso de barreras biológicas mediante partículas de MOF autopropulsadas

Research project corresponding to the call 2023 and reference PID2023-146253NA-I00, for grants for «Proyectos de Generación de Conocimiento».

MOF-based motors (MOFtors) have attracted great deal of attention in the micro/nanotechnology field, since the synergetic combination of the intrinsic hybrid material features (eg. versatility, porosity) with the ability of the self-motility behavior provides enhanced performances, as recently proven in the analytic, environmental or biomedical fields (eg. water remediation, biosensing or drug delivery). The motion

mechanisms of these self-propelled micro/nanomotors can be fostered by catalytic (chemical fuels) or fuel free (external stimuli) propulsion reactions upon a specific administration route. Thus, their physicochemical properties (eg. particle size, surface charge, stability, energy source) are intimately related with their affinity to diverse biological structures &/or matrixes which, in turn, compromise their toxicity, biodistribution and efficacy.

The aim of this BioMOFtion project is to evaluate the biological barrier bypass of these self-propelled MOFs under specific physiological environments, examining their biointeractions between surface characteristics &/or physicochemical features as well as to investigate their potential as efficient drug delivery systems-DDs.
