InBat: Injectable batteries of semi-solid electrodes
Research project corresponding to the call 2018 and reference: RTI2018-099228-A-I00, within the State Program of Research, Development and Innovation Oriented Challenges of the Society (Research Challenges 2018).
This Project aims at developing and demonstrating a technology that uses Li-ion battery materials in a different configuration than that of current Li-ion batteries. The differential feature of the proposed technology is the use of semi-solid electrodes of tunable properties, which are to be exploited for improving the transport of ions through the electrode and modifying the manufacturing process. Hence, the objective of the proposed technology is twofold. On the one hand, thicker electrodes storing high amounts of charge per area are to be realized, which would enable lowering the battery cost by decreasing the contribution of inactive materials. On the other hand, simpler manufacturing process involving cheaper equipment and less infrastructures is to be established, which would open up the possibility of creating a new ecosystem of small and efficient cell and pack manufacturers at local or regional scale.
