OMBAT: Organic Redox-Active Materials for Redox Flow Batteries
Research project corresponding to the call 2021 and reference PID2021-124974OB-C21, for grants for «Proyectos de Generación de Conocimiento».
Batteries have become essential elements in modern society enabling success and market penetration of a number of gadgets and applications such as mobiles, tablets, smartwatches, etc. Moreover, batteries are called to play a central role in the transition towards an environmentally friendlier and more sustainable energy system acting as power sources for electric vehicles and energy buffers for the intermittent energy production for renewable energies.
The overall objective of OMBAT project is to lay the foundations of a next-generation of sustainable battery technology, which innovative nature relies on the use of sustainable redox-active polymers through redox-mediated processes. This new mediated-RFB will exhibit an excellent balance among all KPIs, and will overcome the present limitations of state-of-the-art batteries, i.e. energy density, sustainability, safety and cycle-life.
