NAPOLION: New Advanced coordination POLymers for CO2 valorizatION
Research project corresponding to the call 2022 and reference PID2022-139956OB-I00, for grants for «Proyectos de Generación de Conocimiento».
The increasing rate of fossil fuel combustion contributes to excessive CO2 emissions and to the resulting global climate change. Particularly, in the second quarter of 2022, greenhouse gas emissions in the European Union (EU) alone reached 905 million tons of CO2, 3% more than in the same quarter of 2021. However, to reach the new net 55% reduction target for 2030, EU member states must align their ambitions and efforts.
In this context, NAPOLION proposes to develop new porous hybrid materials, Metal-Organic Frameworks (MOFs), as adsorbents and/or catalysts for the adsorption and transformation of CO2 to high value-added products (i.e., green fuels). Unlike other studies, this project focuses on the 3 current challenges of the CO2 conversion using MOFs: stability, selectivity and scalability. For this purpose, the adequate selection of the MOF composition is crucial: metals (low toxicity, abundance, and potential catalytic activity against CO2) and ligands (rigid, symmetric, highly conjugated, functionalized with groups capable of CO2 stability, and/or capable of hosting extra metals in their structure).
